For frequent cruisers like my own family, sometimes the same old seven seas are just not enough…if you’re in the same boat (sorry for the terrible pun), you should expand your horizons to a river cruise, just like we’re considering in the fall/winter. First-time river cruisers often have a difficult time deciding which brand they should try. While it always depends on each individual traveler, I wanted to focus today on our favorite bang for your buck river cruise line: AmaWaterways.
AmaWaterways manages to combine luxury accommodations with fantastic prices and incredible itineraries, allowing travel enthusiasts to discover new, amazing destinations with the convenience of only unpacking their bags once. River cruising is an entirely different experience than most large-ship cruise lines provide: they are much more serene and relaxed, so fans of Broadway shows and middle-of-the-night deck parties will need to adjust to a more peaceful pace. In my opinion, even as a representative of cruisers in their early 20s, this is a great thing – it actually gives you the opportunity to enjoy yourself at night and take in the sights in – and between – each port of call.
One of the most fascinating things about AmaWaterways are the itineraries offered, from Asia to Europe to Africa. I personally have my sights set on one of their Christmas cruises. For example, can you just imagine how magical it would be to stop by the Christmas Markets nestled along the Danube, all the way from Nuremberg to Budapest (with 2 nights before or after in Prague)? Or maybe you’d prefer to spend Christmas on the Rhine, from Basel to Amsterdam (and enjoy two nights in Zurich & 2 nights in Lucerne ahead of time!).
Either way, for those who have already seen Europe by the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas, this is an entirely different experience that would allow you to enjoy the internal cities of the continent without sacrificing the convenience of a cruise.
Another favorite itinerary? Consider their Africa departures, which are full itineraries that combine land portions, like Cape Town, Kruger, and even Nairobi, with safari cruises, always ending with a couple of nights at Victoria Falls. It’s a great way to explore Africa from a new perspective (or, for first timers to Africa, it’s a fantastic introduction to the continent!).
Finally, don’t forget about their Vietnam, Cambodia & The Riches of the Mekong sailing, which takes guests on a land and river tour from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, and everywhere in between. Right now, this fantastic itinerary starts at only $949 per person – what better way to experience this amazing destination?
