When I first heard about traveling to the Atacama Desert, even I wondered to myself: why would the driest desert on earth be on anyone’s bucket list? Thankfully, the great Clark Kotula filled me in on exactly what makes the Atacama Desert and, specifically, his resort Awasi, so perfect. Clark is the man behind Insight Latin America, a wonderful company that represents some of our fantastic partner properties throughout South America, a continent just waiting to be discovered by any type of traveler, from the adventurous to the luxury enthusiast.
First and foremost, the area is a photography lover’s dream. Nestled in the sands of the Atacama Desert, it’s like an oasis to travelers. Imagine a scene fresh and saltwater aquifers in the foreground, while the snow-capped Andes Mountains stand tall in the distance. You don’t have to use your imagination too much, the photos really speak for themselves:
If you’re lucky, you might even catch some of the famous pink flamingos taking a dip in the aquifers.
This Virtuoso partner property consists of only 8 rooms, which allows for highly individualized service. For example, each room has a private guide and a 4×4 vehicle assigned to them during their stay. Every day, they can choose from nearly 50 activities to participate in – with so much to do, guests could easily stay and explore for over a week. Clark informed me that, while people usually choose to stay only 3-4 nights here, they walk away longing to go back, saying that, “There was so much more we didn’t see!”. Guests can enjoy everything from hiking, both moderate and advanced, to horseback riding, to visiting both archaeological sites and salt flats. Or, kick back and enjoy a relaxing picnic:
For any travelers familiar with Tswalu in the Kalahari Desert, the overall atmosphere, concept, and level of service at Awasi are very similar. I love how naturally the architecture blends in with the surrounding environment, how the staff caters to the guests with private guides, and how the property boasts the perfect amount of seclusion, relaxation, and exploration in the middle of a vast and intriguing desert atmosphere. Not only that, like Tswalu, Awasi is a Relais and Chateaux property, so be prepared to indulge in some seriously great meals (you tell them what you’d like, they make it happen) and an extensive selection of Chilean wines.
Even better? The property is all inclusive – so your excursions, meals, all beverages, lodging, and transfers are included in the up front price. While the overall experience is undeniably amazing for any traveler, Awasi prides itself in getting to know you as a traveler. Their custom-made itineraries are able to capture the Atacama experience of your dreams and turn it into a reality.
As an agent with the same passion for her clients’ travel dreams, I can relate to Awasi on a number of service levels and am confident in their ability to go above and beyond in catering to my clients. Because of this, I’m excited to announce ou current special at Awasi, a promotion that you’ll only receive when booking through a Virtuoso partner company like Vacations by Lindsey: receive a fourth night free at Awasi when traveling from May 1-September 30 of this year. This is a perfect getaway for your last minute family vacations or even for couples – anyone interested in exploring a new playground of uncharted desert landscape!
I’m happy to tailor a trip around your preferences and needs and can provide the perfect cities to pair Awasi with depending on your travel dates, preferences, and interests. For more information or to begin planning your own trip, please fill out our Request a Trip form!
