One of the coolest parts of running a travel company is when our team gets to test out the products – together! At Epperly Travel, we’re an (almost) completely remote team, meaning that we connect over phone, email and regular Zoom calls, but it’s rare for us to have the opportunity to meet up. When we have those moments, like we did at the Montage Palmetto Bluff a couple weekends ago, it’s something really special.
I adore partners like Montage who understand that a travel advisor’s experience on their property will resonate the most if we experience it just like our clients would. This means a well-paced itinerary that combines moments to highlight their unique feature with just the right amount of downtime. Each moment at the Montage was such a treat for our team!
Your arrival as a guest to the Montage starts well before you check in – the 10 minute drive from the main road to the property is an experience in itself. The Montage sits on 20,000 acres of private land. Between the Spanish-moss laced trees to the sprawling, scene marsh, you immediately notice a sense of place: you are most definitely in low country.
That’s made even more evident by the ample amounts of fresh seafood on the menus – crab and shrimp everything, yes please! Of course, there’s plenty for non-seafood lovers, as well, like the comfort food served up at Cole’s (buckets of fried chicken? Biscuits and honey butter? Can you tell that my favorite part of being a guest here was eating!?).
I could go on about the food experience, but I think you get the gist that this Southerner felt right at home. Beyond the dining, our activity experiences were an absolute blast. We began our tour of the property by visiting the horse stables, which are a world class operation. From novices to experienced riders, there’s a horse experience for everyone – even the youngest riders, who will enjoy time spent on Winter, a snow-white pony who’s happy to sport a unicorn horn to make every little girl’s dreams come true. After an easygoing ride on Winter, kids are even invited to participate in finger painting – on her coat! Winter gets to enjoy a massage and fresh wash and the kiddos get to express their inner artist with this activity.
Unfortunately we did not participate in this activity, but it took everything in me not to request it as a team building exercise. Instead, and I don’t know how to not make this an awkward transition, we visited the archery range.
Little did I know the Epperly Travel team was made up of several Katniss-level archers, but bullseyes were flying left and right (just not from me).
If you think our archery skills are great, you should see us in our real element – travel planning!
The Montage is equipped, both activity and accommodation-wise, to handle all sorts of travel styles, from couples seeking a romantic getaway (how charming are their standalone cottages?!) to a multi-generational family searching for a place that has something for the entire family (we’d recommend a multi-bedroom home, and we can assist with comparing options for you!).
The outdoor activities expand far beyond the horseback riding and shooting, imagine taking your family on a bike ride through the whimsical low country setting to one of the 5 treehouses on property, where you can climb to the top for a beautiful view (look close and you might even see dolphins jumping!).
Looking for a good home base for day trips? Let us arrange a day trip on one of the property’s 30 different boats – it’s easier to get to Hilton Head through the channels than it is by road! If you’d prefer by road, though, the resort’s partnership with Cadillac is all you’ll need to pop around the nearby town of Bluffton (just 20 minutes away) or Savannah (only half an hour drive!). It’s also a great spot to plan a day trip to Kiawah Island or Charleston (or, as many of our clients do, have a split stay between any of these nearby cities with your time at Montage!).
And, for those of us who would simply prefer to stay put, the resort makes it so easy to enjoy down time, from the indoor bowling alley to the numerous pools to the magnificent spa (which we personally inspected and can say with confidence is totally up to standards. We knew this was important to our travelers, so we had to check it out for ourselves.)
Our team walked away with the warmth of a nice vacation glow and the knowledge of a property that we cannot recommend enough. Our best piece of advice? Stay longer. It’s such an easy drive from Atlanta that we visited for a short two night getaway, but it’s definitely worth a lengthier visit to be able to enjoy even half of what all the Montage offers. Plus, the resort offers nightly s’mores – and two nights of s’mores by the campfire is just not enough.
