Why go to the Maldives? This unique destination is one of the most fascinating travel hotspots for romantic getaways. Imagine overwater bars, underwater restaurants, and underground wine cellars in one of the most breathtaking settings you can envision. Whether it’s for a honeymoon or romantic getaway, it’s like the more affordable, off the beaten path version of French Polynesia.
As much as I love Tahiti and its surrounding islands, the price range in the Maldives is fantastic for overwater bungalows – starting at $400/night for an overwater with a private pool! A trip to the Maldives, including roundtrip international air and a week in overwater accommodations for two, starts around $8,000 total. Also, it’s a year round destination. While there is a rainy season, no time is a bad time to visit this stunning destination.
For those who are unfamiliar with the destination, the Maldives are a group of over 1100 islands in the Indian Ocean. The easiest way to reach the destination is via a flight into Dubai (approx. 14 hours from the East Coast) and another flight from Dubai to the main island of Male (approx. 4 hours). Once on the main island, guests will either take a speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight to reach their resort, depending on the resort’s location.
Couples can expect to find a relaxing getaway with plenty of unique experiences, from dining to activities. Imagine being dropped off on a deserted island with nothing but a cell phone for calling your speedboat pickup when you’re ready to leave. Think of a destination that immerses you in the surrounding aquatic nature, from night dives to underwater restaurants where fish swim around, like living in an aquarium. If all of that isn’t quite your cup of tea, there’s always the option to swim in your private plunge pool or hop off your bungalow into the surrounding lagoon. A trip to the Maldives is like walking into a living postcard – it’s an oasis just waiting to be explored.
Stay tuned to the blog these next few days – I’ve declared it Maldives Week! I’ll be featuring a different resort every day, giving you an insider’s scoop on how the different resorts cater to your own personal travel style. The Maldives are perfect for split stay vacations, so I recommend pairing two or more of these together to give a very well-rounded experience.
On a side note, I’ve also been learning extensively about the Seychelles for the perfect honeymoon or romantic getaway (William and Kate seem to agree). While I won’t feature any properties from the destination this week, I do want to mention it to keep it on everyone’s radars! It has recently become a hotspot thanks to the royals’ fantastic choice in honeymoon locations. While pricier than the Maldives, the slightly more rugged landscape offers a bit more in terms of activities, not to mention fantastic beaches that are unlike anywhere else in the world.
