To discover the romantic side of Hangzhou, you first must discover Hangzhou itself. Most travelers outside of China have never heard of the destination, but for those who live in the country, Hangzhou is on the list of “must see” cities. Even Marco Polo declared it one of the most enchanting places he’d ever seen. The Chinese regard the destination so highly that they even have a saying that goes, “In Heaven, there is paradise. On earth, Suzhou and Hangzhou.” The former has become a hotspot for tourists, not quite as charming as it once was. Hangzhou, however, is still every bit as paradisal as it once was, definitely a place worth seeing while in China.
- · Lingyin Temple – Founded in 326 AD, it quickly became the center of worship for Chan Buddhists. The temple is most notable for its Buddhist cliff carvings, the most famous of which is the “Peak that Flew from Afar” (see attached).
- · West Lake – Hangzhou has several elements of good feng shui: hills, forests and water. Hangzhou’s magnificent West Lake is dotted with gardens, temples and pagodas.
- · Longjing tea fields – Hangzhou is the center of green tea production in China.
For couples visiting Hangzhou, Imperial Tours has quite a few tricks up their sleeves to turn an normal visit into a romantic one worth remembering. The tea fields mentioned above are absolutely picturesque, perfect for a stroll before entering an ancient tea house, where you will partake in a private tasting. Similar to a wine tasting, you’ll be comparing varietals from green to black to white to oolong teas. This is definitely an experience unique to the region, you won’t want to miss it!
One of Hangzhou’s showpieces, the West Lake, is breathtaking from any vantage point, but even more so by gondola (just like Marco Polo once did!). You’ll enjoy a relaxing ride with champagne and live music to serenade you on your journey – who needs Venice?!
