There’s a reason why the Caribbean island of Anguilla has been voted by Travel + Leisure as the top island destination two years running. Between the dining, the beaches, and the people, it captures the dream that most people have in their heads about the Caribbean. Sadly, the island was badly damaged back in 2017 when Hurricane Irma ripped through the Caribbean. However, we’ve watched excitedly over the past 8-10 months as the hotels have come back on the line and decided to pop down for a visit ourselves and the verdict is in: Anguilla is back and better than ever.
Why better than ever? The 5 star hotel scene on this particular island has always been exceptional but many of the properties took the time to renovate post-hurricane, bringing more than just simple touch-ups upon their reopening.
To name a few of our favorite hotels:
The famed boutique hotel Cap Juluca underwent the management change to Belmond shortly before Hurricane Irma. The reopening of the hotel has been long awaited and does not disappoint: that beach is the best on the island. With all ocean view rooms located along the beachfront, the crystal clear waters and powder-fine white sand are the real reason to come here, and Belmond has honed in on that with their level of beach service. Never have we seen a more attentive beach staff and, even at a nearly full occupancy level, the way the beach is laid out never makes you feel too on top of the other guests.
After the change of flags to a Four Seasons several years prior, this super modern, fun hotel is at the top of its game with iconic Four Seasons service, delivered in a livelier atmosphere than one would find at Cap Juluca. To boot, the location here allows for easy access to visit multiple off-property dining venues (don’t worry, we’re getting to the food scene shortly!), walkable up and down the beach.
While in Anguilla, news broke that the boutique charmer, Zemi Beach House, is officially becoming part of the Hilton Hotels collection. Considering its price point tends to come in slightly less than Cap and Four Seasons, this one’s a well kept secret that won’t remain a secret for long thanks to its new affiliation – get in here while there’s still availability!
You shouldn’t be expected to choose from just the descriptions and the list above, that’s exactly why you hire an Epperly advisor to help match you to the right resort (and to ensure that Anguilla is the right island for your needs!). But, let’s say you’ve already got it figured out, just let us know and we can score you some extra perks at these properties.
While lazing on the beach at your resort of choice is a large part of the fun in Anguilla, so is the dining experience. Fans of Turks and Caicos will find themselves right at home on this island, which offers tons of local and upscale cuisine options to choose from. Make sure you don’t miss our top recommendations!
For a Romantic Night Out:
Grab a table right next to the water at Mango’s and watch the sun set. Their Sesame Snapper is just the right amount of flavor while still being light and delicious.
For a “Must-Try”:
Blanchard’s restaurant is famous for a reason. While the entrees are amazing, grabbing several small plates and going tapas style is just as delicious. No matter what you do, don’t miss the cracked coconut dessert.
For Classic Caribbean:
Looking for unpretentious and delicious? Tasty’s is as down-to-earth as it gets. Try the Coconut Curry Shrimp – need we say more?
